The Origin of UESL

Fate has a funny way of bringing people together—sometimes it’s a raised hand in a crowded room, other times it’s a shared pancake at breakfast. But for the Unified Esports League (UESL), it was both.

A Hand Raised, A Friendship Forged

It all began at a Poway‑based nonprofit networking meeting. Matthew Iske, UESL’s founder, was up at the mic, sharing his organization and introducing himself. The room was attentive—until Tony Rubino, now our Business + Special Needs Development Advisor, shot his hand into the air and announced, “You don’t know me and I don’t know you, but we’re going to get coffee!”

That spontaneous invitation was the spark. Over that first coffee—and the countless cups that followed—Matthew and Tony discovered they shared a relentless drive to serve their community. Matthew brought his entrepreneurial experience; Tony brought deep ties to, and passion for, the special needs community.

Pancakes, Possibilities, and a Game‑Changing Idea

One morning at the Poway Pancake House, amidst stacks of flapjacks and syrupy conversation, the restaurant’s owner wandered by to chat business. As the three talked about the current business climate (of peak Covid), the owner casually suggested, “Why not use video games? All the kids are playing video games nowadays.”

In that moment, it all clicked. Video games weren’t just a pastime—they were a bridge. With Matthew’s lifelong love of gaming and Tony’s special needs expertise, the blueprint for UESL was drafted on a diner napkin - and has led to creating safe, supportive gaming spaces where IDD and neurotypical individuals can make friends, learn, and grow side by side.

From that fateful pancake breakfast onward, creative problem‑solving has been UESL’s heartbeat. Whether designing individualized technology education plans (ITEPs) or mapping college + career pathways through gaming skills, we never settle for “just the usual.”

  • We turn clients’ passions into real‑world strengths.

  • We pair cutting‑edge equipment with coaches trained in empathy + inclusion.

  • We celebrate every victory, from mastering a new controller to landing a dream internship.

Our spirit lives in every game, tournament, and coaching session. Because true innovation isn’t just about “what” we do—it’s about how and why we do it.
